NRC Awarded Champion's Grant

North Rock Creek Public Schools was recently awarded the Champions Grant (Title IV) from the Oklahoma State Department of Education. With this grant, NRC will receive $247,876 in total funding to accomplish the following goals during the 2018-2019 school year:
Science Focal Area goals include: 1) Increase students’ hands-on, active “doing” of science by 30% through evidence-based curriculum aligned to OAS-Science; 2) Increase daily science instruction to 45 minutes per day; 3) Increase teacher knowledge of the content, practices and crosscutting concepts to teach science effectively by 25%; 4) Increase student awareness of scientific contributions of individuals from all ethnic origins by 15%; 5) Increase teacher content knowledge of integrating technology into science instruction by 20%; and 6) Increase integration of technology into instruction to support the learning of science practices and content through authentic, real-world applications of learning by 20%. Project activities include: implementing evidence-based science curriculum aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science, creating curriculum maps and pacing guides for PK-5, creating interdisciplinary lessons integrating science into reading and math for PK-5 classrooms, creating cultural connections to individuals of different ethic origins who have made scientific contributions, providing professional development for science and technology, providing science and instructional technology coaches (consultants), and connecting families to science learning through grade-level science family nights.
Safe and Healthy Schools goals include: 1) Increase PK-5 student access to a systematic approach for identification, referral, and follow up of students needing social, emotional, behavioral, or mental health services, with a minimum of 10% of students receiving Tier 2 or 3 interventions; 2) Increase parent and family engagement in training opportunities for social, emotional, behavioral, or mental health prevention and intervention by 50%; and 3) Increase teacher knowledge of social, emotional, behavioral, or mental health prevention and intervention by 20%. Project activities include: implementing Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) framework, establishing a PBIS plan, implementing PBIS teams, providing a PBIS coach (consultant), hosting fall and spring Healthy Families Institutes, and providing professional development for teachers in the areas of family and community engagement and social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health prevention and intervention.
Several partners will join North Rock Creek to accomplish project goals, providing valuable in-kind services and resources, including: Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Pottawatomie County Health Department, City of Shawnee, Shawnee Police Department, Oklahoma Baptist University, Gordon Cooper Technology Center, Hope Revealed, Oklahoma State University Extension Center – Pottawatomie County, Community Renewal of Pottawatomie County, and Knights of Columbus.
